The Montville Township Historical Society and Montville Township are bringing back Canal Day on Saturday, April 18 from 12 to 4 p.m. along Macculloch Drive. The free community celebration is the first of its kind since the Morris Canal’s dedication ceremony in 1988.
The event will transform the area along the historic canal into a pedestrian-friendly celebration featuring historical presentations, live period music, guided bus tours of canal sites throughout the township, interactive exhibits, a mobile museum, food trucks, and remarks from local, county, and state officials.
The Morris Canal played a central role in Montville’s development during the 19th century. Coal, iron, agricultural products, and manufactured goods moved along its waters, connecting communities across northern New Jersey. Visitors to Canal Day will be able to walk the historic towpath and explore how the waterway shaped the region.
The timing is intentional. Canal Day is part of Montville’s participation in the nationwide America 250 celebrations marking the country’s 250th anniversary. Organizers are encouraging local businesses and residents to get involved as sponsor partners. Interested sponsors can reach the Montville Township Historical Society at montvillehistoricalsociety@gmail.com.
Canal Day takes place along the canal next to Macculloch Drive in Montville Township. No registration is required.
