New Jersey has one of the densest car cultures in the country, and most of it does not happen at big ticketed events. It happens on Wednesday nights in a parking lot, on Sunday mornings on a town green, and on Friday evenings at a plaza off Route 287.
Morris County has a full slate of these, and almost all of them are free to attend and free to show. Here is the recurring lineup worth knowing.
Morristown Green
The MPD Cops and Rodders group runs two different things on the Green. There is a Cars and Coffee on Sunday mornings, roughly 8am to 11am, and a Wednesday evening cruise night from about 5pm to 8pm. Both are in the middle of downtown Morristown, which makes them the easiest ones to fold into an ordinary day out.
Starlight Cruisers, Boonton
Friday evenings, about 5pm to 8pm, at the Walmart Plaza near Routes 202 and 287. This one runs deep into the fall, usually from late April through early October, and it is one of the most consistent Friday nights in the county.
Dog Pound Cruisers, Budd Lake
Second and fourth Wednesdays, around 5:30pm, in the Home Goods parking lot. A spring through September run, and a good one if you are on the western side of the county.
NJSRA Sunset Cruise, Succasunna
Tuesday evenings, roughly 5:30pm to 8:30pm at the Roxbury Mall, through the summer months. Tuesday is an unusual night for a cruise, which is exactly why the regulars like it.
The Barn, Rockaway
Thursday evenings on select dates, and it runs later than most of the others. Worth checking if your schedule does not line up with the earlier cruise nights.
Before you drive out
- Confirm the date first. Cruise nights are weather dependent and the seasons shift year to year. Almost every one of these is announced on the organizing club’s Facebook page a day or two ahead.
- Most run April through October. The season winds down as the evenings get dark early, and picks back up in spring.
- Bring cash. Many of these raise money for a local charity or a food pantry at the entrance, even when showing is free.
- Getting there early matters more than you think. The good spots fill in the first half hour, both for showing and for parking.
- They are free. Almost all of the recurring Morris County cruise nights cost nothing to attend, which makes them one of the better cheap nights out in the county.
