The leaves are turning, the mornings are getting colder and, before long, Morris County driveways will be sitting under ice and snow for the next few months. That makes this fall the time to take a good look at your asphalt, and Succasunna’s All County Paving has some advice on what to look for before the first freeze.
The family owned company has been paving driveways, parking lots and roads out of Morris County since 1992, and this is the stretch of the year when a small fix now can save a much bigger repair in the spring.
Why winter is so hard on Morris County asphalt
“The biggest thing that affects the asphalt in our area is the ice and snow during the colder months,” the All County Paving team told us. “All of the freezing and expansion directly affects the cracks and pot holes in asphalt.”
Here is how it happens. Water gets into a small crack, freezes, expands and pushes the crack wider. Then it thaws and does it again, over and over from December to March. By spring, a hairline crack you ignored in October can turn into a pothole.
Your fall driveway checklist
Take a walk down your driveway this weekend. All County Paving says these are the signs to watch for:
- Cracks, even small ones, since that is where water gets in
- Potholes that will only get deeper once the plows start running
- Unraveling or rough areas where the surface is starting to break up
- Low or sinking spots where water pools and freezes
If you spot any of these, fall is the window to get it looked at before the ground freezes and the snow shovels come out.
Getting on the schedule before the cold sets in
There is no real slow season for the crew, but they try to move quickly. “The whole year is pretty busy for us, but we like to get our customers taken care of ASAP, which keeps us flexible,” the team said. “We can work with anyone’s schedule.”
