The Town of Boonton is moving ahead with a significant streetscape project along its historic Main Street corridor, and residents have a direct opportunity to shape the outcome. A Public Information Center meeting is set for Tuesday, April 21, 2026, from 4 to 7 PM at Town Hall Council Chambers, 100 Washington Street in Boonton. The session is drop-in, so you can arrive any time during the three-hour window.
What Phase 1 Covers
The Historic Main Street Revitalization Phase 1 targets the stretch of Main Street (County Route 511) between Liberty Street and Division Street. Planned improvements include:
- Roadway resurfacing and restriped pavement markings, including crosswalks
- Rectangular rapid flashing beacons at unsignalized intersections
- ADA-compliant decorative traffic signal upgrades at Boonton Avenue and Division Street
- Pedestrian curb extensions (bump-outs) to improve crossing visibility and safety
- New ADA-compliant sidewalk curbs and curb ramps throughout the project area
- Replacement of existing street lighting with decorative LED fixtures
- New benches, planters, trash receptacles, bike racks, and bollards
- Bicycle-safe grates and curb pieces where needed
How the Project Is Funded
The project is funded through the Federal Highway Administration’s Transportation Alternative Set-Aside Grant Program (TAP), administered by the New Jersey Department of Transportation. Boonton is also moving forward with a shared services agreement with Morris County tied to the revitalization effort, which was on the agenda at the April 6 Boonton Town Council meeting alongside the town budget and additional redevelopment priorities.
A Long-Anticipated Downtown Upgrade
Boonton Main Street, Inc. has been a driving force behind revitalizing the town’s commercial corridor for years. This project is a concrete step toward making downtown Boonton more walkable, accessible, and inviting for shoppers, diners, and local businesses.
Project Schedule
The project is anticipated to be bid, awarded, and begin construction by the end of 2026. The town has indicated that Phase 1 is the first in a broader plan, meaning additional improvements may follow.
How to Get Involved
The April 21 meeting is open to residents, business owners, and tenants along the corridor. Attendees can review project plans, ask questions of the project team, and submit feedback in person. If you cannot attend, written comments can be submitted by mail or email through May 19, 2026 to be included in the official project record.
We encourage anyone who lives, works, or shops along Boonton’s Main Street to make their voice part of the planning process.
