Shop Morris County recently had the great opportunity to interview Jackie Dubrovich, a Team USA Fencing Team member. As a two-time Olympian, Jackie has demonstrated her talent and dedication on the world stage, inspiring many with her journey. Raised in Riverdale, New Jersey, her passion for fencing as a young lady led her through training, international travel, and competition. In this exclusive interview, Jackie shares experiences about her upbringing, the intense training routines, some memorable experiences of her time as an Olympian, and the mental strategies that keep her focused and motivated. Her story is about determination and hard work, with many teachable moments for aspiring athletes everywhere.
Can you tell us about your background and what life was like growing up for Jackie Dubrovich?
“I love being born and raised in New Jersey. It’s a great place to grow up, and there’s a reason I haven’t left the state after college. I did train a lot and traveled the world from a young age, competing in fencing, so I didn’t have a conventional upbringing. I went to Columbia University and graduated in 2016 with the goal of making an Olympics. I balanced a full-time job with training/competing and made Tokyo. I then decided to take another chance on myself and also made Paris three years later.”

What is Jackie Dubrovich’s training routine? How do you prepare for fencing competitions every day?
“I train five days a week, and that includes strength and conditioning, private lessons with my coach, drills, situational bouting, fencing against an opponent, and rest and recovery. I also incorporate video analysis to study my opponents.”
What has been your favorite experience as an Olympian so far? How did it change you?
“My favorite experience so far has been anytime I’m able to share all of the fun things to do in the Village with my teammates. Fencing is typically an individual sport, but the added component of the team event makes it really special to be able to share these experiences with my friends, and these are memories we will have for a lifetime.”
How does Jackie Dubrovich stay motivated and focused when competing at such a high level? Do you have any special techniques or routines?
“I work with a sports psychologist and take care of my mental health since at this level of competition, a huge component of having a larger advantage is being strong mentally. I also incorporate visualization and tactile cues to center me and help me focus on the opponent in front of me.”
What advice would you give to young athletes in Morris County who want to become Olympians?
“My advice to athletes is to stay determined and hungry. You lose a lot more than you win, and it’s important to learn from those losses instead of having them discourage you.”
