The Vietnam Veterans Moving Wall is coming to Rockaway Township for a six day visit running from Wednesday, July 1 through Monday, July 6, with the wall on display at Peterson Field on Fleetwood Drive.
The Moving Wall is a half size traveling replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. It carries the names of the more than 58,000 service members who died or remain missing from the Vietnam War, and it brings the experience of the national memorial home to Morris County residents who may never have the chance to visit the capital.
The wall arrives Wednesday, July 1 at 1:00 p.m. at Rockaway Township Town Hall, escorted by the Warriors Watch Riders along with local fire and police, and welcomed by the Mayor, Town Council, and township employees. Crews raise the wall at Peterson Field the following morning, and the official opening ceremony takes place Thursday, July 2 at 7:00 p.m.
Public viewing runs Friday, July 3 through Sunday, July 5, with a veterans only hour from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. each day and general visitation from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. On the final day, Monday, July 6, veterans visit from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m., the public from 9:00 a.m. to noon, and a closing ceremony begins at noon before the wall is taken down.
As President John F. Kennedy once said, “A nation reveals itself not only by the men it produces but also by the men it honors, the men it remembers.” The Moving Wall gives the whole community a place to do exactly that.
Residents who want to help can volunteer to assist visitors during the display by contacting Shannon McCarty at 973-627-7200, extension 2074. The display is free and open to the public.
