SubscribeDenville Pizzeria will serve its last day under the families who opened it on Saturday, August 29, ending a 50 year run on Diamond Spring Road.
The pizzeria at 20 Diamond Spring Road has been family owned since 1976, when brothers-in-law Giovanni Battista Gambino and Gaetano Di Maggio went into business together alongside their wives, Anna Gambino and Rosa Di Maggio. What began as an old fashioned pizza parlor attached to a small dining room grew into one of the longest running restaurants in town. A 1998 renovation gave the dining room a name of its own, Buon Appetito, an Italian trattoria the family built to feel like an outdoor table in Sicily.
The Di Maggio and Gambino families announced the news on Instagram this week, framing the final day as a thank you rather than a goodbye. “We have watched generations grow up, celebrated milestones together, and shared countless conversations, laughs, and, of course, a lot of pizza,” they wrote. They closed the letter with a line aimed squarely at the town: “Thank you, Denville, for 50 unforgettable years. It has truly been an honor to serve you.”
For plenty of Denville families, the place has been less a restaurant than a fixture. It sits a few blocks from the shops on Broadway, it has fed decades of team dinners and Friday nights, and the same two families have been behind the counter the entire time. That kind of run is rare anywhere in Morris County, and rarer still on a road that carries as much traffic as Diamond Spring.
The space is not going dark. The families said they are handing the business to the Pietrowicz family, who plan to open a new restaurant called Boomer’s Pizza & Provisions in the same location this winter. In their announcement the outgoing owners described it as passing the tradition on, and wished the incoming family many years of success in Denville.
Through Saturday, August 29, Denville Pizzeria is still open for pickup and delivery at 20 Diamond Spring Road, and orders can be placed by phone at (973) 625-4321. Anyone planning one last pie has this week to get it in.
Denville has one of the deepest pizza benches of any town its size in the county, and we broke down the full lineup in our Denville pizza guide. For the rest of what is worth a stop downtown, our guide to Denville covers the shops, parks, and restaurants around Broadway. The family posted their full announcement on Instagram, and more of the restaurant’s history is on its own story page.
