Mount Olive Township sits in the northwestern corner of Morris County, where Route 46, Route 206, and Interstate 80 cross paths. Most people know it by its two halves: Budd Lake, wrapped around the largest natural lake in New Jersey, and Flanders, the older village to the south. Here is a local’s guide to what makes the township worth a trip, from the water to the fairways to the table.

Budd Lake

Budd Lake is the township’s namesake and its centerpiece, the largest natural lake in the state and the heart of the community that grew up around it. The lake anchors the northern half of Mount Olive, and its shoreline and nearby parks are where a lot of local life happens, from quiet fishing mornings to summer and fall gatherings. For more open water nearby, see our guide to the best lakes in Morris County.

Turkey Brook Park

If Budd Lake is the township’s front yard, Turkey Brook Park is its backyard. The 267-acre park off Flanders Road is Mount Olive’s main gathering place, with ball fields, walking and hiking trails, a dog park, a fishing pond, and a summer spray park that keeps kids busy. It is also the stage for many of the township’s biggest events, from the summer carnival to the free Country in the Park concert.

Golf and the outdoors in Flanders

Down in Flanders, the Morris County Park Commission runs Flanders Valley Golf Course, one of the busiest public golf complexes in the area with 36 holes spread across rolling terrain. See how it stacks up in our roundup of the best public golf courses in Morris County. The surrounding township is full of open space and quiet back roads that turn to color in October, an easy add-on to a round or a lake day.

Where to eat

Mount Olive’s dining leans casual and family-run. In Budd Lake, Enzo’s is a longtime local Italian favorite, and Mt. Olive Bagels handles the morning rush. In Flanders, Efsane serves Turkish and Mediterranean plates that land on best-of lists across the county. On the township’s western edge near the Hackettstown line, Jersey Girl Brewing pours craft beer with live music and food trucks in its beer garden. Getting there

Mount Olive is about 40 minutes west of Morristown by car, reached off Interstate 80 and Route 206. It makes an easy day trip whether you are chasing lake views, a tee time, or a quiet fall drive.
