It is home to more than 500,000 residents, with Morristown serving as the county seat and Parsippany-Troy Hills standing as the most populous town. The county was established in 1739, and today its 39 towns range from busy downtowns and Route 10 corridors to lake communities, farm towns, and quiet residential boroughs.

If you have ever wondered exactly how many towns are in Morris County, or you want the full list in one place, here is our local’s guide to all 39, grouped by the part of the county they call home. Where we have a deeper guide to a town, we have linked it so you can keep exploring.

How Many Towns Are in Morris County?

Morris County has 39 municipalities. They are a mix of towns, townships, and boroughs, each with its own local government, but all part of one county that stretches from the Chatham and Madison area in the southeast to Mount Olive and the Highlands in the west.

Morristown and the Central Towns

The heart of the county sits around the county seat. This group includes Morristown, Morris Township, Morris Plains, Hanover Township, East Hanover, Florham Park, and Harding Township. Morristown anchors the region with its historic Green, Revolutionary War sites, restaurants, and train access, and the surrounding towns blend corporate campuses, parks, and established neighborhoods.

Madison and the Chathams

Just to the southeast are Madison, Chatham Borough, and Chatham Township. Known for walkable downtowns, strong schools, and easy commutes, these three are among the most sought-after addresses in the county.

The Route 10 and Route 46 Corridor

The busy commercial spine of the county runs through Parsippany-Troy Hills, Denville, Randolph, Rockaway Borough, Rockaway Township, Dover, Victory Gardens, Wharton, and Mine Hill. Parsippany-Troy Hills is the county’s largest town by population, Denville is known as the Hub with its lakeside downtown, and Dover brings a lively arts and dining scene. Victory Gardens is the county’s smallest municipality.

The Lake and Highlands Towns

Out west and north you will find Mount Arlington, Roxbury, Mount Olive, Netcong, Jefferson Township, and Mountain Lakes. Several of these border Lake Hopatcong, the largest freshwater lake in New Jersey, and the area is a summer draw for boating, beaches, and hiking.

The Mendhams, Chesters, and the West

The county’s rolling farm country is home to Mendham Borough, Mendham Township, Chester Borough, Chester Township, Washington Township, and Long Hill Township. Chester’s historic Main Street, the farms around Long Valley in Washington Township, and open space define this quieter, more rural corner.

Boonton, Montville, and the Northeast

The northeastern edge of the county includes Boonton Town, Boonton Township, Montville, Pequannock, Lincoln Park, Kinnelon, Butler, and Riverdale. This group mixes historic downtowns like Boonton with wooded, lake-dotted communities such as Kinnelon.
