We put together this guide to the rinks in and right around Morris County, with public skate details, what to bring and a few ways to turn a skate session into a full winter day out. Mennen Sports Arena, Morris Township
The home rink for most of the county is the William G. Mennen Sports Arena, run by the Morris County Park Commission at 161 E. Hanover Ave. in Morris Township. It is a three-surface ice arena with a pro shop and a cafe, and it offers public skate sessions every day of the week, plus Learn to Skate classes, figure skating, hockey programs and private lessons.
- Fall public skate schedule (September 8 to December 24): Monday, Wednesday and Friday 4:00 to 5:30 PM; Tuesday and Thursday 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM; Saturday and Sunday 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM.
- Admission: $9 on weekdays, $11 on weekends and holidays. Skate rental is $6, with sizes starting at toddler 6.
- Save with a pass: the Weekday Pass is $90 and the Anytime Pass is $110, and both are buy 10, get 2 free. The Anytime Pass also covers holidays and the Friday Night DJ Skate.

Rinks Just Over the County Line
If Mennen’s times do not line up with your plans, these rinks are a short drive from most Morris County towns.
Essex County Codey Arena, West Orange
Inside the South Mountain Recreation Complex at 560 Northfield Ave., Codey Arena has two NHL-sized rinks and weekend public sessions, with reservations taken online. It is an easy trip from eastern Morris County towns like Florham Park, Madison and Chatham, and it pairs nicely with a visit to Turtle Back Zoo in the same complex. Ice Vault Arena, Wayne
Ice Vault Arena at 10 Nevins Rd. in Wayne is the closest option for Lincoln Park, Pequannock, Riverdale, Kinnelon and Montville. Public skating times shift around hockey events, so check the schedule on icevault.com before you go. Groups of 15 or more can ask about group rates.
Skylands Ice World, Stockholm
For Jefferson, Rockaway Township and Lake Hopatcong families, Skylands Ice World at 2765 Route 23 in Stockholm is right up the road. It runs public skate, Learn to Skate and hockey programs, and it saves you money if you pre-register and pay online. One heads up: the rink no longer provides helmets, so bring your own for little skaters. Call (973) 697-1600.
Skating on Ponds and Lakes
Morris County has no shortage of lakes, and a real cold snap always has people eyeing the ice. Only skate where a town or park officially opens the ice and posts that it is safe, and never go out on your own read of the conditions. Tips for a Better Skate Day
- Check the rink’s schedule the morning you go. Public sessions move around hockey games, holidays and events.
- Dress in layers, bring gloves and wear thick socks. Rinks are cold even on mild days.
- Bring a helmet for young kids, especially at rinks that do not rent them.
- Go early on school holidays and winter break, when sessions fill up fast.
- Look into multi-visit passes if your family skates more than a few times a season.
