Mountain Lakes dining comes in two clusters. Midvale Road, by the train station and the lakes, is the walkable, neighborhood side, home to The Station and Hapgood’s. Route 46 is where you find Barka, the diner and the bagel shop, with easy parking and quick access from Interstate 287. Planning a full day in town? Our guide to things to do in Mountain Lakes covers the lakes, the historic walking tour and the parks.

The Station at Mountain Lakes

The borough’s signature dinner spot sits inside the beautifully restored fieldstone train station on Midvale Road. Chef and owner Bradley Cooper has run this scratch kitchen for more than 25 years, with fresh seafood, steaks, homemade soups and pastas, plus a bar and a patio for warm nights. Lunch runs on weekdays and dinner most nights. Reservations are a good idea on weekends.

Address: 99 Midvale Rd, Mountain Lakes, NJ 07046
Phone: (973) 335-5330
Cuisine: Contemporary American, Seafood, Steak

Barka Mediterranean Seafood & Steak

Barka is the go to on Route 46 for a night out, with a Mediterranean menu built around fresh seafood and steaks. It opens for dinner every night, happy hour runs daily from 4 to 7 p.m., and the dining room is a favorite for date nights and celebrations.

Address: 60 US-46, Mountain Lakes, NJ 07046
Phone: (973) 917-3386
Cuisine: Mediterranean, Seafood, Steak

Hapgood’s Restaurant & Bar

Sharing its name with Herbert Hapgood, the developer who built Mountain Lakes, Hapgood’s is the cozy, small town spot on Midvale Road for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Expect American comfort food with a modern twist, from big breakfasts to burgers and dinner specials, and it now serves alcohol too. It is the natural stop after the borough’s historic walking tour.

Address: 44 Midvale Rd, Mountain Lakes, NJ 07046
Phone: (973) 299-3399
Cuisine: American

Paul’s Family Diner

Family owned and operated since 1947, Paul’s is a true Jersey diner with a big all day menu of breakfast, sandwiches, burgers, salads and comfort food entrees. It is open every day, kids get crayons and coloring books, and takeout and delivery are easy.

Address: 320 Route 46 East, Mountain Lakes, NJ 07046
Phone: (973) 627-4436
Cuisine: Diner, American

Mountain Lakes Bagel & Deli

The early morning stop for commuters and families, with fresh bagels, breakfast sandwiches, omelettes, coffee, wraps and hot sandwiches. It opens at 5 a.m. on weekdays and 6 a.m. on weekends, and it handles catering platters for parties and offices.

Address: 350 US-46, Mountain Lakes, NJ 07046
Phone: (973) 627-4999

The Corner Creamery

The town’s ice cream stop, tucked on Romaine Road near the train station. A cone here is the classic way to end an evening in town; check its hours before you go, since they can change with the seasons. We covered its free junior cone day this spring.

Address: 5 Romaine Rd, Mountain Lakes, NJ 07046
Cuisine: Ice Cream, Dessert

Just Outside Mountain Lakes

Because Mountain Lakes is so compact, locals often eat in the neighboring towns, all within a few minutes’ drive. Denville’s Broadway has one of the best small downtown dining scenes in the county, covered in our guide to the best Denville restaurants. Boonton’s Main Street, just north, mixes cafes, pubs and international kitchens, and our things to do in Boonton guide is a good place to start. Parsippany, to the east, adds dozens more options along Route 46 and Route 10.

Explore Mountain Lakes NJ Restaurants

Mountain Lakes is built for an easy, unhurried meal. Park by the train station and you can walk from The Station to Hapgood’s to The Corner Creamery in a few minutes, with the lakes and the historic stucco “Hapgood houses” all around you. Hop over to Route 46 and you get Barka for a dressed up dinner, a classic diner and a bagel shop that opens before sunrise.

What Makes Mountain Lakes’ Restaurant Scene Special?

Mountain Lakes is one of the best preserved planned communities in New Jersey, and its restaurants reflect that small town character. There are no chains on Midvale Road, the owners know their regulars by name, and the dining room at The Station is a piece of borough history. What the town lacks in quantity it makes up for in places that people have been going back to for decades.
