Known as the military capital of the American Revolution, it pairs Revolutionary War landmarks with one of the county’s best dining and shopping scenes, almost all of it within a few blocks of the Morristown Green. Start at the Morristown Green

The 2.5-acre Morristown Green has been the center of town since Colonial times, and it is still where everything happens. Shops, restaurants, and historic architecture ring the park, and depending on the season you might catch the Sunday farmers market, an outdoor concert, or the town’s holiday light display. It is the natural starting point for a walk around downtown.

Walk through Revolutionary War history

Morristown National Historical Park was the first national historical park in the country. At Washington’s Headquarters and the Ford Mansion, George Washington and the Continental Army spent the brutal winter of 1779 to 1780, and nearby Jockey Hollow preserves the soldier encampment grounds and miles of trails. A few minutes north, Historic Speedwell is where Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail gave the first public demonstration of the telegraph in 1838.

Catch a show or a museum

The Mayo Performing Arts Center anchors the downtown arts scene with concerts, comedy, Broadway tours, and family shows inside a restored 1937 theater. Just outside downtown, the Morris Museum at 6 Normandy Heights Road blends art, science, and history and is home to the Guinness Collection of mechanical musical instruments and automata. It is open Wednesday through Sunday.

Morristown’s restaurant-packed streets are also lined with shops. National names like Bluemercury share the sidewalks with local boutiques such as Just Jersey, which stocks New Jersey-made gifts. The mix of chains and independents makes it an easy afternoon of browsing between meals.

Get outside

Just beyond downtown, Morristown has plenty of green space. The Frelinghuysen Arboretum offers formal gardens and walking paths, Fosterfields Living Historical Farm shows what farm life looked like a century ago, and the Loantaka Brook Reservation is a favorite for walking and biking. Together they make Morristown as good for a slow outdoor morning as a busy night out.

Getting there

Morristown is easy to reach. The Morristown train station sits on NJ Transit’s Morris and Essex Line with Midtown Direct service to New York Penn Station, and the town has several parking decks for drivers. Once you are downtown, almost everything is walkable.
