Randolph does not have a classic downtown Main Street, and that is part of its appeal. This Morris County township of roughly 26,000 people is built around green space, with an extensive trail system, a longtime community playhouse, and a dining lineup that runs from steakhouses to soup dumplings. Here is how we spend a day in Randolph.

The Great Outdoors

Freedom Park is the heart of it. The 172-acre park has seven athletic fields, a large playground, picnic areas, and paved paths, and it connects with Brundage Park and the neighboring James Andrews County Park to form a green belt of roughly 1,000 acres. Randolph’s township trail system runs through much of that open space, giving walkers, runners, and mountain bikers miles of marked trails without leaving town. Brundage Park adds its own preserve trails and a small pond that draws anglers in warm weather and ice skaters when it freezes. For more nearby routes, see our guide to the best hiking trails in Morris County.

Theater, Learning, and Community

Brundage Park Playhouse is Randolph’s community theater, staging musicals and plays throughout the year in an intimate space at Brundage Park. The township is also home to County College of Morris, whose campus on Center Grove Road hosts public performances, lectures, and the annual Randolph Freedom Festival each summer. Veterans Community Park is the spot for the township’s free concerts and seasonal events.

Where to Eat

Randolph eats well. Black River Barn is the local pick for a steak by the fireplace, while Mr. Crabby’s Seafood House and Sports Bar covers crab boils and game day in equal measure. Rosie’s Trattoria handles the red-sauce Italian craving, China City is the neighborhood Chinese standby, and the Randolph Diner delivers the all-hours Jersey diner experience. When the weather is warm, save room for a gelati from Rita’s of Randolph.

Grab a Local Beer

Cap the day at Fort Nonsense Brewing Company, Randolph’s craft brewery and an easygoing taproom for a flight and a pour before heading home.
