Veterans Day falls on Wednesday, November 11, 2026, right in the middle of the week. Morris County government offices, the Morris County Library, post offices and most banks close for the day, while stores, restaurants and the stock market stay open. Here is what our team confirmed, plus where Morris County honors its veterans each year.
What’s Closed in Morris County on Wednesday, November 11
- Morris County government offices: Closed. Veterans Day is on the county’s official 2026 holiday schedule. Offices reopen Thursday, November 12.
- Morris County Library (Whippany): Closed all day, per the library’s 2026 holiday list. Town libraries set their own hours, so check yours.
- Post offices: Closed, with no regular mail delivery. Veterans Day is a federal holiday.
- Banks: Most are closed because Veterans Day is a Federal Reserve holiday (see the Federal Reserve holiday schedule). ATMs and mobile banking still work.
- NJ Motor Vehicle Commission: Veterans Day is a New Jersey state holiday, so plan on MVC agencies being closed and check the MVC locations page before you go.
What’s Open
- Stores, malls and grocery stores: Regular hours at most, and plenty of retailers run Veterans Day sales.
- Restaurants: Open as usual. Many national chains announce free meals or discounts for veterans and active duty military in early November, so bring your military ID and check each chain’s announcement.
- Stock market: The NYSE and Nasdaq are open. Bond markets usually close.
- NJ TRANSIT: Trains and buses run. Check the Holiday Service Guide for any schedule changes before you ride the Morristown or Montclair-Boonton lines.
Schools: Watch the NJEA Convention Week
Many Morris County families get two days off the week before. The NJEA Convention runs Thursday and Friday, November 5 and 6, 2026 in Atlantic City (NJEA), and most New Jersey public schools close for it. Whether schools also close on Veterans Day varies by district, so check your district calendar. Town halls and trash pickup schedules are set locally as well.
Where to Honor Veterans in Morris County
These ceremonies happen every year. The 2026 programs have not been posted yet, so here is how they ran last year.
- Morristown and Morris Township Veterans Day ceremonies: The Memorial and Veterans Day Association of Morristown and Morris Township holds its ceremonies on Veterans Day itself. In 2025, services began at local war monuments at 7:45 a.m., followed by a 10 a.m. ceremony at the Patric Hyland Memorial at the Morris Township Municipal Building, 50 Woodland Avenue, and the main program on the Morristown Green at 11 a.m. In bad weather the program moves indoors to the Morris Township Municipal Building.
- Morris County Annual Veterans Ceremony: The Board of County Commissioners presents Morris County Distinguished Military Service Medals to local veterans each November. In 2025 it was held Wednesday, November 5 at 6:30 p.m. in the Administration and Records Building, 10 Court Street, Morristown, free and livestreamed. Watch morriscountynj.gov for the 2026 date.
