Morris Township wraps around Morristown on three sides, and it holds some of the best free and low-cost outings in Morris County: a working 1900s farm at Fosterfields, 3,200 kinds of plants at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum, and more than 25 miles of trails at Lewis Morris County Park. Here is our local guide to what to do in Morris Township, NJ, when to go, and where to eat nearby.
Frelinghuysen Arboretum: Gardens Open Every Day of the Year
The Frelinghuysen Arboretum at 353 East Hanover Avenue was once the country home of George and Sara Frelinghuysen and now holds more than 3,200 species of flowering plants and trees. The grounds are open daily from 8 AM to sunset. Walk the Rose Garden and Cherry Valley in spring, the Great Lawn in summer, and the Beth Fisher Winter Garden from late fall into early spring, when bark, berries and early blooms carry the show. It is one of the easiest strollers-and-grandparents walks in the county.
Fosterfields Living Historical Farm: A Step Back to 1900
Fosterfields Living Historical Farm at 73 Kahdena Road runs the way a Morris County farm did around the turn of the 20th century, with animals, field work and the historic Foster home. The farm season runs April through October, open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 AM to 3 PM in spring and adding Sundays from July through October. Mark it for next spring, and read our full guide to Fosterfields before you go.
Lewis Morris County Park: Trails, Sunrise Lake and a Dog Park
Lewis Morris County Park at 270 Mendham Road (Route 24) is the big outdoor playground of the township, open daily from sunrise to sunset. It has more than 25 miles of trails for hiking, running, mountain biking and horseback riding, plus picnic areas, athletic fields, group camping and a dog park. In summer, the Sunrise Lake Beach Club adds swimming, boating and an inflatable water obstacle course for kids. The park borders Jockey Hollow, so you can pair it with the Revolutionary War encampment covered in our Harding Township guide.
