Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, 2026, with Black Friday on November 27 and Small Business Saturday on November 28. In Morris County, county offices close for both Thursday and Friday this year, the post office and banks close Thursday, and the stock market takes a full day off and then a half day. Here is what is open and closed, and what we are still waiting on retailers to announce.
Closed on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 26
- Morris County government offices: Closed Thursday and Friday. The day after Thanksgiving is an official county holiday in 2026, per the county’s holiday schedule. Offices reopen Monday, November 30.
- Morris County Library (Whippany): Closes early at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, November 25 and is closed Thanksgiving Day, per the library’s 2026 hours page. Friday is listed as a county office closing, so call (973) 285-6930 before heading over that day.
- Post offices: Closed Thursday with no regular mail delivery. Normal service returns Friday.
- Banks: Most are closed Thursday because the Federal Reserve is closed (see the Federal Reserve holiday schedule). Most reopen Friday.
- Stock market: The NYSE is closed Thursday and closes early at 1 p.m. on Friday, November 27, per the NYSE 2026 holiday calendar.
- NJ Motor Vehicle Commission: Last year MVC closed on Thanksgiving Day and reopened for regular business on Friday. Check the MVC locations page for the 2026 notice.
Stores on Thanksgiving Day
Most big retailers have not announced their 2026 Thanksgiving hours yet, so here is how they handled it last year. We will update this list as the 2026 announcements come in.
- Closed last Thanksgiving: Target, Walmart, Costco, Home Depot, Lowe’s, Best Buy, Kohl’s and Trader Joe’s. Target has stayed closed on Thanksgiving every year since 2021.
- Open with shorter hours last Thanksgiving: select ShopRite stores, Stop & Shop, Whole Foods, Acme, Wegmans (most closed at 4 p.m., with pharmacies closed) and many CVS locations.

Black Friday, November 27
Rockaway Townsquare, the county’s big mall at 301 Mount Hope Avenue in Rockaway, has not posted its 2026 holiday hours. Its regular hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and malls typically open early on Black Friday, so check the Rockaway Townsquare hours page the week of Thanksgiving. Santa’s photo set there opens November 13; see our pictures with Santa guide.
Black Friday is also a big day for holiday shows. MPAC in Morristown hosts A Charlie Brown Christmas: Live on Stage at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.
Small Business Saturday, November 28
The Saturday after Thanksgiving is the best day to shop local in Morris County’s downtowns, from Morristown and Madison to Chatham, Denville and Boonton. It is also the night of Santa’s Arrival and the Lighting of the Morristown Green, which opens the Christmas Festival at the Morristown Green.
