The Florham Park Public Library is hosting a free Introduction to Mystery Writing workshop on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, from 6:30 to 7:45 PM. The adult program meets in the library’s Akhoury Room at 107 Ridgedale Avenue in Florham Park and is open to ages 18 and up. Registration is required.

The workshop is led by instructors from The Writer’s Circle, and it walks participants through planning, structuring and writing a mystery step by step. According to the library, the session uses creative exercises to help each writer build a fictional world, develop characters, put together a rough plot outline and begin sketching the clues and red herrings that mystery readers love to chase.

That makes it a good fit for anyone who has a story idea sitting in a notebook, for longtime readers of whodunits who have wondered how the puzzle gets built, and for writers who work in other genres and want to try something new. No experience is listed as a requirement, and the format is a single 75 minute evening session, so it is an easy way to test the waters.

Space is limited. The library’s listing caps the workshop at 20 people, and once the spots are filled, additional sign-ups are placed on a wait list. To register, use the Introduction to Mystery Writing event page on the library’s calendar, which asks for each registrant’s name, email and phone number. The library sends an email reminder 24 hours before the program.

The Florham Park Public Library runs a full calendar of programs throughout the fall, and the timing puts this one just a few days before Halloween, which suits a night spent thinking about suspects and alibis. You can browse everything else coming up on the Florham Park Public Library events calendar.

The library has been busy this season. We recently covered its Second Sundays series of free music and history programs, and its free Voices of Rock concert with Briz earlier this month. For more ideas around the county, see our guide to things to do in Morris County this month.
