The Cookie Connect will serve its final day at its Morristown location on Friday, August 28, closing the South Street cookie cafe after nearly five years in business.
Owners Ali and Andrew announced the decision in a message to customers, pointing to operating costs that have climbed faster than a small shop can absorb. The example they gave is the premium chocolate that goes into their cookies. A 25 pound supply cost them roughly $230 a year ago. Today the same order runs about $480, more than double in twelve months.
Rather than switch to cheaper ingredients, add artificial additives, or cut back on the hand work that goes into every cookie, the owners said they chose to keep their standards where they were. They also said they did not want to pass the increase along to customers who are dealing with higher grocery bills of their own.
“We refused to feed you anything less than the best,” they wrote. “Because we couldn’t fathom hiking up our prices on you during a tough economy, operating this way became unsustainable.”
The shop sits at 88 South Street in downtown Morristown and built its following on stuffed cookies, cereal bar creations, ice cream, milkshakes and cookie cakes, with hours that ran until midnight most nights. The Cookie Connect was started in 2017 by two recent college graduates and grew out of Bloomfield, and the Morristown store opened in the fall of 2021 as part of a two location expansion that also brought the brand to Hoboken.
The owners said they announced the closing a month ahead on purpose. The extra time gives their staff a runway to line up new jobs and gives regulars a chance to come in, stock up on their favorites and say goodbye to the people behind the counter before the doors close.
Morristown is the only location closing. The Cookie Connect will keep operating its Bloomfield, Hoboken and Ridgewood shops, and the owners left the door open to a return. “Who knows… maybe one day we’ll pop back up locally somewhere new,” they wrote.
Until August 28, the Morristown shop is still open at 88 South Street.
