This one has already happened. Here is what is running in Morris County now: fall festivals and fairs, corn mazes, apple picking, and what is on this weekend.
The Mount Tabor Children’s Day Parade steps off at 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 8, 2026, and it is one of the oldest running children’s traditions in New Jersey. It is free, it is walkable, and for one afternoon it takes over the most unusual neighborhood in Morris County.
Here is what families should know before heading over: the full weekend window, this year’s theme, and where to actually put the car.
Where Mount Tabor is, and why the setting matters
Mount Tabor is not its own town. It is a historic neighborhood inside Parsippany-Troy Hills, pressed up against the Denville border, and it looks like nowhere else in the county. The community began in 1869 as one of the first Methodist summer camp meeting grounds in New Jersey, and the original canvas tents were gradually replaced by tightly packed Victorian cottages with gingerbread trim and wraparound porches. The Mount Tabor Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2015, and the community buildings that anchored the camp meeting, including the open-air Tabernacle, the Bethel, the post office, the firehouse, and the library, are all still standing.
The practical effect on parade day is that the streets are narrow, curving, and shaded, and the crowd stands close enough to the floats to see the tape holding them together. It feels less like a municipal parade and more like a block party the rest of the county is invited to.
What time is the parade, and how long is the weekend?
The parade begins at 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 8, 2026. The Denville String Band, a concert and marching band based next door in Denville, has the Mt Tabor Children’s Parade on its public performance calendar for that afternoon.
The parade sits in the middle of a longer stretch. The Camp Meeting Association of Mount Tabor lists Children’s Day Weekend on its official calendar as running from noon on Thursday, August 6 through 1 p.m. on Sunday, August 9, 2026, so there is programming on both sides of Saturday.
The celebration itself traces back to 1885, when the camp meeting’s Sunday School held its first dedicated children’s program. It has been an annual fixture ever since, which puts the 2026 edition well past the 140 year mark.
The 2026 theme is Big Top Tabor
Organizers announced this year’s theme as Big Top Tabor on the official Mount Tabor Children’s Day page, so expect a circus running through the floats, the costumes, and the porch decorations along the route. Themes drive a real amount of the effort here, and families build floats in driveways for weeks ahead of the date.
The parade is a mix of homemade floats, kids in costume, decorated bicycles and wagons, handmade maypoles, marching bands, and local fire apparatus. Entries run the full range from strollers on up, so there is room in the line of march for a toddler in a wagon and for a full flatbed.
Parking and getting there
This is the part visitors get wrong. Mount Tabor’s streets were laid out for tents and horses, not for a Saturday crowd, and there is very little parking inside the neighborhood itself. Streets along the route close before step-off.
Plan to park on the outer edges and walk in, and give yourself a cushion of 30 to 45 minutes before 1 p.m. if you want a shaded spot on the curb. Carpooling from the Denville or Parsippany side is the easier play. Bring chairs, because the good stretches of curb fill up early, and bring water, because early August in Morris County rarely cooperates.
Who it is good for, and what else to do nearby
This one skews young. It is close to ideal for kids roughly 2 to 10, and the walkable scale makes it manageable with a stroller as long as you accept that the sidewalks are narrow and uneven in places. Admission is free.

Downtown Denville is a short drive for lunch or an early dinner afterward, and Parsippany sits in the other direction with one of the deepest restaurant benches in the county.
