Parsippany-Troy Hills is the most populous municipality in Morris County, a sprawling township of lakeside neighborhoods, historic villages, and one of the busiest dining and shopping corridors in North Jersey. Most people know it from the highways that cross it, Interstates 80 and 287 and Routes 46, 10, and 202, but there is far more to Parsippany than the exits. Here is a local’s look at where to go.
Neighborhoods to Know
Parsippany is really a collection of communities. Lake Hiawatha has the township’s most walkable stretch, a dense main street along North Beverwyck Road lined with family-run pizzerias, bakeries, and delis. Lake Parsippany and Rainbow Lakes are quiet lake communities with their own beaches and clubs. And Mount Tabor, the gingerbread-trimmed Victorian village tucked into the township’s eastern edge, is one of the most photographed places in Morris County.
History and Culture
Parsippany’s headline attraction is the Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms, the log home and former farm of designer Gustav Stickley, a leader of the American Arts and Crafts movement. The National Historic Landmark on Route 10 West opens for guided tours Friday through Sunday and is worth the trip for anyone who loves design or history. Mount Tabor’s summer camp-meeting roots and pastel cottages add a second layer of history a few miles away.
Parks and the Outdoors
The county’s flagship recreation space, Central Park of Morris County, sits on former Greystone hospital land in Parsippany. Its 420-plus acres hold miles of paved and wooded trails, turf fields, sand volleyball courts, a disc golf course, a five-acre dog park, and an all-access playground. It is the kind of place you can walk, run, bike, or bring the dog any day of the week.
Where to Eat and Shop
Dining is one of Parsippany’s real strengths. Route 46 is known across North Jersey for its Indian restaurants and grocers, and Lake Hiawatha’s main drag is stacked with old-school pizza and Italian spots. National names keep arriving too: Trader Joe’s is on the way to Route 46, and Burtons Grill and Bar is opening its first New Jersey location in the township.
