Chatham has a new bagel shop on Main Street, and it arrives with a following already built. The Bagelry opened at 459 Main Street on Saturday, September 19, taking over the space that used to be Noah’s Bagels and filling it with hand rolled bagels, breakfast sandwiches and deli counter staples.
This is the second location for The Bagelry, which has spent years building a regular crowd at 170 East Hanover Avenue in Cedar Knolls. Same dough, same method, now a few towns south in downtown Chatham.
Hand rolled, boiled, then baked
The bagels here are rolled by hand, boiled and baked on premises, which is the slower way to do it and the reason the crust snaps the way it does. It is the same process that earned the Cedar Knolls shop its reputation, and it is the whole pitch behind the Chatham counter.
What to order on the first visit
Breakfast is the easy call. Egg sandwiches come stacked on whichever bagel you point at, and the spread lineup runs well past plain cream cheese. Past breakfast the menu opens up into deli sandwiches, salads, baked goods and catering trays, which is the part worth remembering the next time you are in charge of feeding an office or a travel team.
A Main Street opening day
Saturday morning brought a balloon arch, a line at the register and a storefront that had been quiet for a while back in business. Chatham gets a new breakfast option, and Morris County gets one more reason to argue about who makes the best bagel in the county.
