The Morris Plains Community Band is back at Roberts Garden Park for its annual run of free summer concerts, with live music every Wednesday evening in August at 6:30 p.m. The shows are free and open to everyone, and they take place at the park at the corner of Glenbrook Road and Mountain Way in Morris Plains.
Roberts Garden is a shaded, arboretum-style public park, so families are asked to bring a blanket or lawn chairs and settle in. The concerts are weather permitting, and because there is no indoor rain location, a show is simply canceled if it rains.
A different theme every week
Each concert features its own program. The series opened on August 5 with “Patriotic Fever,” a set of American patriotic music marking both the nation’s 250th anniversary and the borough’s 100th birthday, with help from the Morris Plains Community Choir. On August 12, the band heads to the movies with “Hooray for Hollywood,” a night of well-known works from the silver screen.
The series then continues on the last two August Wednesdays, August 19 and August 26, with a swing-era program and a music from around the world finale. You can check the latest lineup on the band’s upcoming concerts page.
A town band with deep roots
The Morris Plains Community Band traces its history to the Morris Plains Cornet Band, founded in 1888 by village blacksmith Larry Monahan, who taught free music lessons to local kids and led the band for more than 50 years. After a 62-year gap, retired bandleader Larry Ripley re-established the group in 2015, and it has grown into a roughly 75-member volunteer wind ensemble whose players range in age from 12 to 87.
