Morristown is getting national attention again. WorldAtlas has named the Morris County seat one of 10 New Jersey towns ranked among US favorites in 2026, placing it alongside Cape May, Asbury Park, Ocean Grove, Spring Lake, Clinton, Montclair, Princeton, Haddonfield and Red Bank. It is the only Morris County town on the list.

The write-up leans on the thing Morristown has never had to manufacture, which is history. WorldAtlas points to the preserved downtown streets and the sites where George Washington and the Continental Army spent the winter of 1779 to 1780, then to the Green itself, which it calls a central gathering place surrounded by Federal, Victorian and Georgian architecture. Anyone who has walked from South Street to Washington Street on a Saturday knows the description is fair.

The history holds up under scrutiny. Morristown National Historical Park was established on March 2, 1933, making it the first national historical park in the country, and it takes in four sites: Jockey Hollow, the Ford Mansion, Fort Nonsense and the Washington’s Headquarters Museum. Jockey Hollow alone carries more than 25 miles of wooded hiking trails, which is the rare stretch of Revolutionary War ground you can spend a whole morning walking without seeing a parking lot.

The ranking also credits the culture downtown. The Morris Museum is the second largest museum in New Jersey and holds the Murtogh D. Guinness Collection of mechanical musical instruments and automata, a permanent exhibit unlike anything else in the state. A few minutes away at 100 South Street, the Mayo Performing Arts Center runs a year-round calendar of touring music, comedy and theater inside a room that opened in 1937 as the Community Theatre.

The last piece WorldAtlas mentions is the one locals take for granted. Morristown sits on NJ Transit’s Morris and Essex Lines, so New York City is a single train ride away, and the reverse is just as true for visitors coming out. That access is a big reason the downtown restaurant scene, the Morristown Festival of Books and the fall event calendar all pull from well beyond Morris County.

None of this is news to anyone who lives here, but a national list is a useful reminder of what is sitting fifteen minutes down the road. If you want to see the town at its busiest, our guide to things to do in Morris County in September runs through the festival season, and Morristown regulars have a smaller deadline to keep in mind: The Artist Baker is closing on September 30 after 18 years.
