The Morristown Festival of Books returns to historic downtown Morristown on Friday, October 9 and Saturday, October 10, 2026, and with the festival now less than three weeks away, the lineup is locked in. Since 2014, the literary festival has grown into one of the most respected book events in the country, and it is built around two distinct days. Friday night brings a ticketed keynote, and Saturday delivers a free, all day celebration of authors and reading across downtown Morristown.
The 2026 keynote is An Evening with Malcolm Gladwell, set for Friday, October 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the Mayo Performing Arts Center in Morristown. Gladwell, the author of eight New York Times bestsellers including Outliers, The Tipping Point, and Blink, will discuss his new book, The American Way of Killing, an investigation into why the United States sees far more homicides than its peer nations. General admission tickets are $68 and include a signed hardcover copy of the book. Tickets are still on sale online and through the Mayo Performing Arts Center box office at 973-539-8008.
The heart of the festival is Saturday, October 10, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., when the free Main Festival takes over downtown Morristown. The festival center sits on the lawn in front of the historic Vail Mansion at 110 South Street, with author sessions at venues within walking distance along South Street. The fiction lineup includes Anna Quindlen, Emma Straub, Riley Sager, Tessa Bailey, TJ Klune, Maria Semple, Nadia Hashimi, Jean Kwok, and Annabel Monaghan. On the non-fiction side, look for historian Nathaniel Philbrick, David Pogue with Apple: The First 50 Years, New York Times technology columnist Kevin Roose, Robert Kolker, Sam Kean, Joanna Stern, and Manoush Zomorodi. One change to note: Paula McLain has cancelled her appearance. No tickets or reservations are needed for Saturday, and the day happens rain or shine, with outdoor sessions tented.
After each talk, authors head straight to a signing area where readers can meet them and have books personalized. Books are sold all day at the Book Tent on the mansion lawn, and printed programs with the day-of schedule are available at the Information Tent and at every venue. Worth noting for first time visitors, the festival is not held on the Morristown Green, and the compact footprint makes it easy to walk from one session to the next.
KidFest is the festival’s celebration for younger readers, running from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 10. More than 35 children’s authors and illustrators are on the roster, spanning picture books, chapter books, and middle grade, including Dan Gutman, Steve Sheinkin, Erin Entrada Kelly, Peter Lerangis, Barbara Dee, Coe Booth, Kayla Miller, and Julie Fogliano. Kids can meet their favorites, get books signed, and discover new titles.
Getting there is simple. Morristown sits on a direct NJ Transit rail line from New York Penn Station, and the festival center is a short walk from the Morristown train station. Drivers can use the DeHart Street Parking Garage, which has about 800 spaces with entrances on DeHart and Maple Streets, and several other public garages are within walking distance. Accessible parking surrounds the Vail Mansion.
