Boonton is marking America’s 250th birthday with two free community events this month. On Monday, July 20, the Boonton Parks and Recreation Department will bury a Semiquincentennial time capsule on the front lawn of Town Hall at 100 Washington Street, and on Sunday, July 26, the Boonton Historical Society and Museum will trace the town’s Revolutionary War roots at the Boonton Senior Center. Both events are open to the public at no cost.
A time capsule burial at Town Hall on July 20
The Semiquincentennial Time Capsule Event runs from 6:00 to 6:30 p.m. on Monday, July 20, on the Town Hall lawn. The short ceremony includes a few words from town officials, the burial of the capsule, and light refreshments. The capsule will be sealed and set aside for a future generation of Boonton residents to open, turning a half hour on a summer evening into a small piece of local history.
The gathering ties Boonton into the national Semiquincentennial, the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, which towns across Morris County have been marking all summer.
Colonial Boonton and the American Revolution on July 26
Six days later, the Historical Society picks up the same thread indoors. Colonial Boonton and the American Revolution begins at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 26, at the Boonton Senior Center, 126 North Main Street. Museum educator Loren Katsakos will walk through the town’s earliest days and explain how the area contributed to the founding of the United States after New Jersey declared its allegiance to the Patriot cause in 1775.
The talk is a good fit for history buffs, students, and longtime residents who want to understand the ground beneath one of Morris County’s oldest towns.
More to do in Boonton this summer
The two anniversary events land during a busy stretch downtown. The Boonton Farmers Market runs Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Canal Side Park with local vendors and live music, and the Boonton Historical Society and Museum at 210 Main Street keeps regular hours for anyone who wants to dig deeper into the town’s past.
