This one has already happened. Here is what is running in Morris County now: fall festivals and fairs, corn mazes, apple picking, and what is on this weekend.

If there is one thing that sets the Chathams apart from most towns in Morris County, it is having not one but two mayors willing to lace up their shoes and lead a community walk through one of New Jersey’s most remarkable natural landscapes. This Saturday, they are doing exactly that.

The Walk With The Mayors returns to the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge on Saturday, June 13, 2026, with a start time of 8 a.m. Walkers meet at the Great Swamp Education Center off Southern Boulevard. The walk is free, open to everyone, and organized by the Chatham Township Parks and Recreation Department. A rain date of Sunday, June 14 is already in place.

A Free Walk Through 7,700 Acres of Wild New Jersey

The Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge stretches across more than 7,700 acres within the Passaic River basin, and a substantial portion of it lies within Chatham Township itself. Managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the refuge is home to more than 244 bird species, white-tailed deer, river otters, painted turtles, and a rich variety of wetland habitats. Whether you are an avid birder, a weekend hiker, or simply someone who wants to spend a morning outside with neighbors, this setting delivers.

Walkers should bring water, wear comfortable footwear, and dress for late spring weather. No registration is required.

Part of a Summer-Long Series

The June 13 walk is one stop in an ongoing series that launched on May 2, 2026 and runs through July 11. Each installment takes place at a different local park or natural area, giving residents the chance to explore a new outdoor space every few weeks alongside their elected officials.

It is a genuinely thoughtful initiative from two municipalities that share a name, a school district, and a lot of open space. For anyone who has wanted to spend a morning walking with their local leaders, this is a no-cost, no-registration opportunity to do exactly that.

Full schedule and details are available through the Chatham Township community calendar. And if you are mapping out the rest of your weekend, our guide to things to do in Morris County June 13 and 14, 2026 has you covered.
