The Morris County Park Commission has hidden 50 handmade glass medallions across its parks, and anyone can hunt for them.
Called the Great Glass Hunt, the scavenger hunt celebrates the Park Commission’s 70th anniversary. The idea was borrowed from Block Island, Rhode Island, where people search for glass orbs as part of the island’s Glass Float Project. In Morris County, hunters look for glass medallions instead, each one made by the Morris County School of Glass.
The 50 medallions are spread across more than two dozen parks and preserves, including Bamboo Brook Outdoor Education Center and Cooper Mill in Chester, Central Park of Morris County and Old Troy Park in Parsippany, Fosterfields Historical Farm, Frelinghuysen Arboretum and Lewis Morris Park in Morris Township, Pyramid Mountain Natural Historic Area in Boonton, Tourne Park in Boonton and Denville, Silas Condict Park in Kinnelon, and Schooley’s Mountain Park in Long Valley.
Each site holds two or three medallions. They are placed no more than 18 inches off a trail, never buried, and generally not on the ground. They may be tucked into gardens or park structures, but never indoors.
If you find one, you can keep it, but please take only one and leave the rest for the next hunter. Scan the QR code in the bag or fill out the online survey to report where you found it, then snap a photo and share it on social media or email marketing@morrisparks.net.
Dogs are welcome on a leash, except at historic sites and gardens. Stay on marked trails and watch for ticks, poison ivy, and wildlife.
