Hacklebarney Farm Cider Mill (Chester)

Tucked on State Park Road near Hacklebarney State Park, Hacklebarney Farm Cider Mill is the classic Morris County cider donut stop. The seventh generation farm makes its wood-pressed apple cider on the premises from its own blend of apples, and the cider donuts are the reason a lot of people make the drive. Grab a cider hot dog while you are there. In the fall the mill opens Thursday through Sunday from after Labor Day to Thanksgiving week, so plan a late-week or weekend trip. You will find it at 104 State Park Road, Chester.

Alstede Farms (Chester)

One of North Jersey’s best known pick your own destinations, Alstede Farms calls its cider donuts one of its most popular treats: fresh baked, light and finished with a cinnamon sugar dusting, sold by the half dozen in the farm store. Make an afternoon of it with the farm’s mazes, hayrides and fall picking, or come back at night for Harvest Moon Nights. The farm is open daily at 1 Alstede Farms Lane, Chester.

Stony Hill Farms (Chester)

At Stony Hill Farms, the baked goods are made fresh daily on the farm, and apple cider donuts are a fall staple at the market. The market is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through December 23, and the Maze Fun Park next door is open daily through November 1 with its corn maze and fall activities, plus pick your own pumpkins in season. The farm is at 15 North Road, Chester.

Riamede Farm (Chester)

New to our list this year, Riamede Farm runs its fall festival from September 20 through October 31, with apple and pumpkin picking, hay wagon rides, live music, a corn trail and fresh cider donuts. Admission tickets are sold online, and the farm is closed on Tuesdays in September and October, so check the picking schedule before you go. Riamede is at 122 Oakdale Road, Chester.

Wightman’s Farms (Morristown)

A Morristown farm since 1922 and now run by the third generation of the Wightman family, Wightman’s Farms makes its apple cider doughnuts all day long so they are always fresh, and you can often watch the doughnut maker in action. The market also presses its own sweet cider from a special blend of apples, so get a jug to go with the bag. Calling ahead for a big doughnut order is welcome. You will find the farm at 1111 Mount Kemble Avenue, Morristown.

Ort Farms (Long Valley)

Out in the Long Valley section of Washington Township, Ort Farms bakes its homemade apple cider donuts fresh daily in the farm market and serves them plain, with cinnamon sugar, or dusted with powdered sugar, sold by the half dozen or individually. The market is open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and the homemade ice cream stand and kids area make it an easy stop on the way home from a fall drive. The address is 25 Bartley Road, Long Valley.

Tips for the best cider donuts

  • Go early on weekends. October Saturdays and Sundays are the busiest days at every farm on this list, and the first batches of the morning sell fastest.
  • Try a weekday. Wightman’s and Ort Farms make donuts daily, so a weekday afternoon visit usually means a shorter line.
  • Get cider too. Hacklebarney, Alstede and Wightman’s all press their own apple cider, which is the classic pairing.
  • Check hours before you drive. Fall hours change through the season, and festival weekends at Alstede, Stony Hill and Riamede can require admission.
