Send me the list

Rockaway covers a lot of ground. There is the Route 46 corridor, the older Main Street stretch in the borough, and the whole Rockaway Townsquare side of the township, and the food is spread across all three rather than clustered in one downtown.

That is exactly why it is hard to answer “where should we eat in Rockaway” with one name. Here is the short list we actually use.

Caffe Navona

147 US Route 46, Rockaway. The closest thing the area has to a proper occasion Italian room, and the one people book for anniversaries and big birthdays. Worth reserving on a weekend.

Brick 46

68 US Route 46, Rockaway. New American, family restaurant on one side and a real local bar on the other. The kind of place that works for a Tuesday dinner with kids and for watching a game, which is a harder combination to pull off than it sounds.

Missy’s Main Street Cafe

181 East Main Street, Rockaway. Breakfast and brunch, and the volume of regulars tells you most of what you need to know. Go early on a weekend or plan to wait, because this one has a following. For more weekend spots, see our roundup of the best brunch in Morris County.

ElevenGreen

11 Green Pond Road, Rockaway. ElevenGreen is a relaxed, family friendly restaurant, and it is our pick when the plan could be anything: a family dinner, a meal with the dog on the patio, a girls’ night or a milestone celebration in one of its private spaces. Saturday and Sunday start at 8 AM with breakfast until 3 PM, and Monday through Friday it opens at 11 AM. The kitchen is open until 10 PM on Monday and Tuesday and until 11 PM the rest of the week. Check the ElevenGreen hours page before you go, or call (973) 453-6900.

The Exchange

Rockaway. A local favorite that tends to come up whenever someone asks this question in a Rockaway Facebook group, which is usually a better signal than any ranking.

The Rockaway Townsquare side

If you are already at the mall, the dining options around Rockaway Townsquare on Mount Hope Avenue cover the chain end of things, which is genuinely useful when you have a carful of people and no patience left.

A few things worth knowing

  • Route 46 is the spine. Most of the sit down options sit on it, and parking is easy compared to a downtown.
  • The borough and the township are different places. Both say Rockaway, so check which one your destination is in before you drive.
  • Weekend breakfast runs late. The brunch crowd here does not clear early, so a 9am table is a different experience than an 11am one.
