Mount Arlington is one of the smallest towns in Morris County, a borough of a little over 5,900 residents on the southern end of Lake Hopatcong, and it packs a lot into a couple of square miles. Here is our local guide to the best things to do in Mount Arlington, NJ, from the borough’s public beach and quiet lakeside trails to where to grab dinner along Howard Boulevard.
Mount Arlington Public Beach
The borough’s summer centerpiece is the Mount Arlington Public Beach, at the corner of Altenbrand Avenue and Windemere Avenue, across from the police station. The beach is free for Mount Arlington residents with a beach badge, which the borough sells online through CommunityPass. Lifeguards are on duty on weekends starting Memorial Day and every day once school lets out through Labor Day.
It is more than a patch of sand. The beach grounds also have bocce, horseshoe pits and volleyball courts, and in recent summers the borough has used the beach for free evening concerts, including the Vinyl Trio show we covered in August 2026.
Hike the Lake Rogerene Trails
Opened in October 2020, the Lake Rogerene Trails are the borough’s own little nature escape. The trailhead is off Orben Drive just before the firehouse, and three short paths add up to just under a mile of hiking around Lake Rogerene. It is a carry in, carry out trail, and an easy pick for a fall or winter walk with kids or the dog.
Memorial Park and Fireman’s Field
Memorial Park on North Glen Avenue has a pond, a gazebo, a memorial path, a playground and a short nature walk. Kids under 14 can fish the pond between 5 a.m. and 9 p.m. Over on Altenbrand Avenue, Fireman’s Field is home to the borough’s soccer and softball fields, a small chipping and putting area, and the Fireman’s Field Walking Path.
Fireman’s Field is also where the town gathers for its biggest kid event of the fall, the Mount Arlington Halloween Bash, with a costume contest and parade every October.
Get Out on Lake Hopatcong
New Jersey’s largest lake is the reason most people know Mount Arlington. In season, the borough’s Recreation Commission has run free guided kayaking outings on the first Saturday of the month, with sign-ups through CommunityPass, and the lake is a short drive from anywhere in town for boating, fishing and paddling. Our guide to the best lakes in Morris County covers where you can swim, boat and fish around the shoreline.

Lake Hopatcong History Next Door
Just over the line in Landing (Roxbury Township), the Lake Hopatcong Historical Museum sits on the grounds of Hopatcong State Park and tells the story of the lake’s resort era, when trains brought summer crowds to hotels and amusement parks along the shore. The museum keeps limited off-season hours, with open afternoons scheduled for Sunday, November 8, Saturday, November 21, Saturday, December 5 and Sunday, December 20, 2026, from noon to 3 p.m., and visits by appointment.
Good to Know
Borough Hall is at 419 Howard Boulevard, and the borough’s community profile and recreation pages are the best place to check beach badges, kayaking dates and park rules before you go.
