Peruvian food in Morris County is concentrated in two places: Dover, where several family-run spots line Mount Hope Avenue and Belmont Avenue, and Parsippany, home to a wood and charcoal rotisserie and a Peru-Mex kitchen on Route 46. Here are the best Peruvian restaurants in Morris County for pollo a la brasa, ceviche, lomo saltado and the rest of the classics.
Our team checked each of these against its own website or live ordering page before publishing. Hours change, so confirm before you go.
1. Leña y Carbón, Parsippany (Lake Hiawatha)
450 N. Beverwyck Road, Parsippany
The name means “wood and charcoal,” and that is exactly how the chicken is cooked. Leña y Carbón was founded by Peruvian immigrants, and its pollo al carbón menu sells whole, half and quarter birds with the usual sides. Beyond the chicken, the comida criolla section covers lomo saltado and tallarÃn a la huancaÃna, and there is a full seafood menu with ceviche. Look for caldo de gallina on weekends. This is the spot that took over the former Mr. Yellow Pepper space in Lake Hiawatha.
2. La Portada, Dover
130 Mount Hope Avenue, Dover
Longtime Dover diners may still know this family-owned restaurant by its old name, El Marino. La Portada leans into the seafood side of Peruvian cooking, with ceviches front and center, plus anticuchos (grilled skewers) and ajà de gallina, the creamy, mildly spicy shredded chicken stew that is a good first order if you are new to the cuisine.
3. Marino’s Cafe, Dover
90 Belmont Avenue, Dover
La Portada’s sister location, listed on the La Portada website, sits a few blocks away on Belmont Avenue. The menu runs from papa a la huancaÃna (potatoes in a yellow chili cheese sauce) to ceviche mixto, chaufa de mariscos (Peruvian Chinese seafood fried rice) and jalea, a big platter of fried seafood that is built for sharing.
4. Garibaldi Peru-Mex, Parsippany
107 Route 46 East, Parsippany
A small family kitchen that cooks both Peruvian and Mexican food, which makes it an easy pick when your group cannot agree. Peruvian regulars go for the ceviche, lomo saltado and rotisserie chicken. Check the Garibaldi menu before you go, and note that the restaurant says on its own site it does not use DoorDash, Uber Eats or other delivery apps, so plan on picking up or eating in.
What to Order if You’re New to Peruvian Food
- Pollo a la brasa: rotisserie chicken marinated in garlic, cumin and spices, served with fries or rice and green ajà sauce.
- Lomo saltado: beef stir-fried with onions, tomatoes and soy sauce, served with fries and rice. It shows the Chinese influence on Peruvian cooking.
- Ceviche: raw fish cured in lime juice with red onion and chili, usually with sweet potato and corn on the side.
- Ajà de gallina: shredded chicken in a creamy yellow pepper sauce over rice.
