The Town of Dover’s Trunk-or-Treat returns for its 16th year on Saturday, October 17, 2026, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Crescent Field. Admission is free, and the afternoon lands two weeks before Halloween, which falls on a Saturday this year.

The setup is simple and kid friendly. Instead of walking door to door, families walk a lot lined with decorated car trunks, and the people behind each car hand out candy. It is a daytime, low-scare way for younger kids to trick-or-treat, and an easy way for parents to cover a lot of candy stops in one place without crossing a single street.

This year’s lineup includes a costume contest and a trunk-decorating contest, plus a pet costume competition, so dogs in costume are part of the show too. If your family is planning to decorate a trunk, the contest is a good excuse to go all in.

Crescent Field is the town park off Chestnut Street, within walking distance of Dover’s historic business district, with turf fields, basketball courts and a circular walking path. The rain date is Saturday, October 24. Because the event is outdoors, check the Town of Dover Recreation page and the town’s social media the morning of the event for any weather update before heading over.

If you want to make an afternoon of it, our guide to things to do in Dover covers Blackwell Street and some of the best Latin food in Morris County, all a short drive or walk from the field.

Dover’s event is one of several trunk-or-treats and Halloween trails in Morris County this month. Boonton’s Trick or Treat Trail at Grace Lord Park and Mount Arlington’s Halloween Bash at Fireman’s Field are the same day, October 17, and Randolph’s Trunk or Treat follows on October 24. See our Morris County Halloween guide for the full list, plus trick-or-treat times for all 39 towns as they are announced.
