The 23rd annual Lenape Day returns to the Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center in Chatham Township on Saturday, October 10, 2026, from noon to 4 p.m. Members of the Ramapough Lenape Tribe lead an afternoon of ceremonial dances, drumming, traditional games and hands-on demonstrations, and tickets are $5 per person for all ages.
The Morris County Park Commission hosts the day every fall, and this year it lands on the Saturday of the long holiday weekend, two days before Indigenous Peoples’ Day on Monday, October 12. It runs rain or shine.
What to Expect at Lenape Day
The Lenape are the original people of this part of New Jersey, and Lenape Day is built around learning that history from tribal members themselves. According to the Park Commission, the afternoon includes:
- Ceremonial dances and drumming
- Talks on Lenape history
- Traditional Lenape games for kids and adults
- A walk-through tour of a life-sized wigwam
- Bow drill fire-making, plus more hands-on activities
It is a relaxed, family-paced event, and it pairs well with a walk on the center’s trails and boardwalks while the leaves are turning.
Tickets, Parking and the Free Shuttle
Admission is $5 per person. You can register ahead through the Park Commission, and walk-ins are welcome.
Do not park at the education center itself. Event parking is at 240 Southern Boulevard, and free shuttle buses run from 11:45 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. to bring you across the street to the event at 247 Southern Boulevard.
