Every year in late July, the western edge of Morris County turns gold. Acres of sunflowers bloom across Chester and Long Valley, and for a few magical weeks the fields fill with families, photographers, and anyone who needs a sunflower selfie. Here is where to find them, plus our tips for catching peak bloom.
Alstede Farms (Chester)
Alstede is home to the Blooming Giants Sunflower Trail, roughly 12 acres of sunflowers planted across 10 fields. Because the plantings are staggered, blooms run from July all the way into the fall, which makes Alstede the safest bet if your schedule is tight. The trail is included with farm admission, and you can pair it with pick-your-own fruit while you are there.

Stony Hill Farms (Chester)
Stony Hill plants 2.5 acres with 8 varieties of sunflowers for its annual Sunflower Festival, which traditionally runs on weekends in late summer. Expect wagon rides out to the flower field, pick-your-own stems, photo ops, and food. Check Stony Hill’s website and social channels for this season’s festival dates and tickets before you go.

Ort Farms (Long Valley)
This family-owned Long Valley farm grows sunflower fields alongside its farm market, ice cream stand, and pick-your-own crops. It is the kind of place where the sunflowers are just the beginning: grab a cone, shop the newly expanded market, and let the kids burn off energy on the farm.

A Short Drive Away
If you want even more blooms, two nearby favorites are worth the ride. The Sussex County Sunflower Maze in Sandyston opens for the season in August, and Von Thun Farms runs a sunflower trail at its Washington farm in neighboring Warren County.
Tips for Your Visit
Peak bloom in our area usually lands between late July and late August. Go in the morning for softer light and smaller crowds, bring cash or a card for pick-your-own stems, and always check the farm’s website or social pages the day you visit, since bloom timing shifts with the weather each season.
