Madison Wine & Tap, the wine bar and restaurant at 17 Greenwood Avenue in downtown Madison, has closed. A flyer posted in the front window lets neighbors know the doors are now shut, and the restaurant’s OpenTable listing now shows it as permanently closed. No reason for the closing has been shared publicly, and we will update this story if the owners share more.
For a lot of people in town, Madison Wine & Tap was the easy answer to “where should we grab a drink tonight?” It was the kind of place that worked for a weeknight glass of wine after work, a Friday happy hour with friends, or a relaxed dinner out. The menu leaned contemporary American with an Italian accent: Caesar salad, fried cauliflower, shrimp and steak tacos, crab cakes, tuna tartare, penne vodka, a Tap House burger, steak frites, and Margherita and salsiccia pizzas, with dessert to finish.
The bar was the other half of the name. Wines by the glass and by the bottle ran from Prosecco and rosé to Nebbiolo, Barbera d’Alba, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. The draft list made room for New Jersey brewers like Kane and Birdsmouth alongside Guinness, Peroni and Blue Moon, plus nonalcoholic options from Athletic Brewing. Happy hour ran Tuesday through Friday from 4 to 6 p.m.
Neighborhood spots like this one are a big part of what makes downtown Madison a place people want to spend an evening. To the owners, the kitchen and the staff who poured the wine, pulled the drafts and fed this town, thank you from all of us at Shop Morris County. You will be missed on Greenwood Avenue.
Downtown Madison still has plenty of great places for dinner and a drink. Our guide to the best restaurants in Madison, NJ rounds up local favorites with addresses and prices, and our local’s guide to things to do in Madison covers Main Street shops, the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey and more. And this Saturday, October 3, 2026, Bottle Hill Day fills downtown Madison with vendors, music stages and food, a good excuse to come out and support the businesses that are still serving the neighborhood.
