The Metro, the hotel planned for the old Staples site at 22 Lafayette Avenue in Morristown, now has its liquor license, and the plans call for three restaurant areas that will be open to the public.

The Morristown Town Council voted 5 to 0 on Tuesday, September 22, 2026 to award a hotel liquor license for the project. The plan includes three separate restaurant areas, and they are meant for everyone, not just hotel guests. Demolition and construction are expected to start in January 2027.

The hotel itself is not brand new news. The Metro was first pitched for the Staples property in late 2024, when Morristown Green reported it as the second redevelopment project proposed near the Morristown train station, and a town board went through the details in January 2025, according to Morristown Green. What is new this fall is the license vote, the three public restaurants and a start date.

The location matters. Lafayette Avenue sits a short walk from the train station, where NJ Transit’s Morristown Line runs to New York, and from the restaurants and bars around South Street and the Morristown Green. Three new places to eat and drink at a hotel there would add to one of the busiest dining towns in the county, and give train riders and visitors another reason to stay downtown.

No restaurant names, operators or menus have been announced yet, and no opening date has been set for the hotel. Once demolition of the old Staples building starts in January 2027, the next milestones to watch are the restaurant operators and a construction timeline.

We will keep following The Metro as names and dates come out. Until then, see our picks for the best restaurants in Morristown and our full Morristown local guide for where to eat, shop and park downtown right now.
